General Pediatric/Young Adult Unit

Forest Campus

"We'll love your kids like they’re our own"

Henrico Doctors' Hospital General Pediatrics/Young Adult unit offers comprehensive primary well-child and ill-child care, as well as consultation.

A multidisciplinary team of general pediatricians, pediatric hospitalists, subspecialty consultants, pediatric nurses, pediatric nutritionists, peditaric respiratory therapist, pediatric OT/PT, case managers and social workers also provide general pediatric care and coordination of subspecialty services to children with special needs due to chronic illnesses and multiple handicaps.

Our team of highly trained health professionals takes pride in the quality of care we provide children newborn to 25 years in our 12 private bed unit. Seasoned and compassionate nurses pay special attention to safety, age appropriate and family center care.

Safety First
The safety and security of your child/young adult is of utmost importance. At Henrico Doctors' Hospital, we are a secured unit, which means our doors are locked and visitors must call from a phone outside for access. Video cameras are posted so nurses can monitor the halls as well as the front and back doors.

Another safety feature is our central monitoring system. Nurses are able to continuously monitor your child’s heart rate, respiration and oxygen saturation both in the room and at the nurse’s station.

Age-appropriate Care
There is a playroom where children can play games, build, color or play in the kitchenette. We have both the Disney and Family channels, as well as a huge assortment of books. For children who must stay in bed, we bring them activities, offer them a selection of movies, set up PlayStation II or Nintendo. Should your child require an invasive procedure, such as having blood drawn, we take them to a special treatment room so their room remains a safe haven.

For the comfort of our parents, we provide cots, blankets and pillows for overnight stays at your child's bedside. A kitchen equipped with a microwave and refrigerator is available for your use and is stocked with free sodas and coffee. For breastfeeding moms that don’t want to leave their infants, we provide complimentary meal trays.

Family Center of Care
Here at Henrico Doctors' Hospital, we know that parents and family members provide the child's primary strength and support. We believe that families are an important part of the medical care team. As your partner in your child's care, we realize you know your child better than anyone. It is important that you understand and agree with the plan for your child's care. We invite and encourage parents to actively participate in the planning for and delivery of care. Hospitalists and nurses work with parents on a daily basis to adapt care to the child's needs. We share all test results and treatments, assisting parents to make informed decisions regarding their child's care. We encourage parents to learn how to provide everything from wound care to Nebulizer treatments, and even teach children when developmentally appropriate.

Pediatric Hospitalist Program
Henrico Doctors' Hospital offers a 24 hour, 7 day a week Pediatric Hospitalist program, which provides in-patient care for general pediatric conditions, and is designed to assist community pediatricians and family practice physicians when their patients are hospitalized.

The Pediatric Hospitalists are deicated to providing the safest, highest quality care to children and families. Committed to using evidence-based medicine delivered in a family-centered environment, the Pediatric Hospitalists believe that families are best served by fully involving them in the medical care decision process. This includes:

Pediatric Rapid Response Team
The goal of the Pediatric Rapid Response Team (PRRT) is to respond to concerns before the child declines to a critical state. The PRRT provides critical patient assessment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The PRRT does not replace the role of a primary physician. The PRRT provides an opportunity for enhanced clinical assessment, early detection and response to deteriorating patients. Care ids taken to ensure the attending physician is included.
